The accused, Subhash Goswami, had been stalking Monali Yadav, 23, ever since she rejected his marriage proposal a few days ago.
In her statement to the police, Monali had said that her mother and Goswami worked together. Monali and the accused knew each other well as Goswami, who belongs to Bilkha in Junagadh district, used to visit them often.
Goswami had fallen in love with Monali but, according to Monali, it was a one-sided affair. Subsequently, Goswami made a marriage proposal which was rejected by Monali and her parents. This angered him and he started stalking Monali.
On Monday, around 10pm, Monali was passing through Jalarapa Road when Goswami attacked her with a knife, stabbing her in the chest, stomach and back. According to Monali, Goswami had said to her during the attack that if she won't marry him, she won't be able to marry anyone else.
Inspector P B Gohil, who is investigating the case, said Monali was stabbed six times. A complaint has been registered against Goswami under Section 307 of IPC (attempt to murder). After Monali died on Tuesday, police added Section 302 (murder) to the charges.
